Texas — The Texas College Democrats are excited to welcome former U.S. Representative Beto O'Rourke as a candidate for governor of Texas. Beto represented El Paso in the House of Representatives, and ran an energizing campaign for U.S. Senate in 2018 that proved Democrats can win in Texas when we lead with our values.
The stakes could not be higher. As governor, Greg Abbott has done immeasurable harm to the people of this state by his actions (and lack thereof). Whether it be failing to protect the wellbeing of his fellow Texans in the midst of the pandemic, signing the worst voter suppression bill in the country into law, or working to effectively outlaw abortion, the truth is clear. Greg Abbott doesn't care about us — he only cares about running for president by appeasing the far-right.
"In less than a year, Texans will go to the polls and have a clear choice: a governor and a Republican Party hell-bent on attacking and undermining our constitutional rights, our democracy, and our livelihoods or a candidate and a Democratic Party which believe in the right to choose, in our democratic republic, and in our right to live," said El Pasoan J.J. Martinez, president of the Federation. "Beto's announcement today is a welcome one. But all of us must put in the work if we want to bring about the Texas we know we can be — no one on the sidelines."
After years and years of failed Republican leadership, the time has come to put a Democrat in the Governor's Mansion in Austin. This fight will be hard, but it is a fight Democrats can win if we lead with our values. College and university Democrats across Texas stand at the ready for this fight.
